She wore a simple dress, seemingly grown from moss and silk around her. It wasn’t the most comfortable thing in the world, but she had no interest in asking Theophilous for any advice.

Amber was adjusting the bodice, trying to stop it pushing into her chest, when Canary came back through the door. She felt her throat catch as she stared at the blonde in a dress made of the flames and charcoal of the largest volcano in her world.

Canary smiled nervously, “Take it you like?”

“Sorry.” She looked away in embarrassment, “It looks good. Sorry I won’t be matching up beside you.”

“Amber.” Canary stated pointedly, and she looked up at her nervously, immediately drawn to her face, and struggling to stay there and not drift downwards.

She smiled sheepishly, “Yeah?”

“I’m doing this for you. So look. I’m showing off for you, not some noble brat.” Canary smiled, “Though... Something is missing. My necklace.”

“I made you another.” Amber said nervously, producing a black box out of the air and walking over to her. “It’s... Different. We’ll get the other one back, but... Could you... Wear this one? Tonight?”

Canary took the case and opened it slowly, she stared in surprise, “Oh wow. Sapphires.”

The woman struggled for a moment and then sighed, “Could you... Put it on me?”

Amber slipped the necklace gently around Canary’s smooth neck, clasping it behind and letting the largest sapphire, nearly the size of a child’s fist, hang like a teardrop, nestled in her breasts.

She stepped back quickly, tossing aside the case, and took a deep and nervous breath.

Canary fiddled with it, and smiled up at her, “Last one was made of fire. I’ve never seen sapphires this size or shape before. You handmade them?”

“Better if you don’t know what from.” Amber said sheepishly, “Just know that... Wearing this, even Dawn will hesitate to approach you. Won’t affect mortals. Just gods. Make them leave you alone.”

Canary frowned, “Met her. She’s... Overpowering, isn’t she? If she wants the new Summer as a boyfriend, there’s not going to be a man at the ball not standing to.”

“Ew!” Amber laughed and then shrugged, “Though, you’re probably right. So... You met her. Don’t hate me.”

Canary glared, “You kissed someone who has a crush on you. That’s going to piss me off for a good long time. But... Tonight is about us. Me seeing you as more. So I don’t care about Dawn. For tonight.”

Amber snapped her fingers, and two large doors appeared. She held out an arm nervously, shaking. She didn’t know if she could take being touched, even by gloved hands, but this was what was expected. What Canary would expect of a date at a ball.

Canary slipped an arm around hers, and blushed, “So... We’re really doing this. Are they going to announce us?”

“I’ll announce us.” Amber said weakly, “Or they might get upset we’re there. Oh! Nearly forgot.”

She let go of Canary and brushed back her hair quickly, and slipped an earring into each lobe. “Sorry. I made them to match your necklace.
